To ship to an FFL, can that be done by me taking the pistol to a
UPS store and shipping to the
FFL, verbally telling the clerk that it is a firearm and the recipient is an FFL?

UPS Store's will not accept any firearm related packages. I believe the stores are franchises.
Getting Your Firearm Shipment to UPS
Firearms (including handguns) may be shipped only through a UPS Scheduled Pickup Account (specifically, Daily Pickup, Daily On-Route Pickup, UPS Smart Pickup®, and Day-Specific Pickup), or through a UPS Customer Center (counters at UPS operational facilities). Note: Firearms (including handguns) are not accepted for shipment via UPS Drop Boxes or UPS On-Call Pickup®, and may not be tendered to or dropped off at locations of The UPS Store®, any third party retailer, or any UPS Access Point™ location. https://www.ups.com/content/us/en/re.../firearms.html
FedEx has basically the same requirements.

    My how times have changed.

Back when I was in the business I came home from work one day to find a couple of boxes on my front porch from UPS.

A Ruger Redhawk was in one of them ! ! !

How does one ship a firearm to a FFL if not on ups or FedEx?

You can take it to a local FFL - they are able to ship FFL to FFL via USPS . I don't remember the exact shipping requirements (adult signature, insurance, etc) but if I go to the post office and get the correct label and postage on the box then bring the gun to my FFL, he will charge me the transfer fee ($10) and then ship it for me.

Ok, that makes sense. The FFL needs to get their cut. I have sent the slide by ups before to have sights put on. But the whole legal firearm is a different story.

I shipped a rifle that belonged to my grandfather to my cuzin in Washington state. Although he was family, I sent it to his FFL. I used FedEx. Cost me around 60+ bucks.

Add: I also included a copy of my drivers license in the box. My cuz wanted something that belonged to 'our' grandfather. During the time of his (granddads) death, he was not in a financial condition to come down to Texas, having a family of several boys to feed and raise. I wanted him to have the rifle, so I culled it out, called him, had him send FFL info, and shipped it to him. Hassle free.
