What's the most reliable self defense ammo out there?

I'm trying to think of one of the well known self defense rounds that has questionable reliability and I can't come up with one. In addition the performance difference between the top rounds is negligible.

There's lots of comparisons on YouTube. I don't remember if Shooting The Bull did a .45acp round up but if he did, I really like his comparison tests. He does consistent, quality testing.

Probably the two most popular SD rounds are Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST.

I'm not very familiar with self defense ammunition myself I've always just loaded up some fmjs and went on I figure either way it's a 45 not much will still be standing in the end but I've got a kid now so figured I needed an upgrade

More looking for wider expansion to keep from punching holes through multiple things

I'm a fan of the HST bullet, but you can't go wrong with Gold Dot, Hornady or any of the other big guys either.

Here's a good evaluation by TNoutdoors of the +P, you'll see the consistent expansion HST is known for and it stays arround the 13" mark in gel http://youtu.be/HfqM3grAiyl

I haven't shot +P in .45 acp, in 9mm I'm switching away from +P to straight 124gr because I shoot faster with it (easier to control). I don't know how noticeable the slightly hotter round would be with the bigger, slower .45

Google "Lucky Gunner Handgun Self-Defense Ammunition Ballistics Test" and you can find out. Awesome test and very well done.

I have tried a number of brands and bullet styles in my G30S, and Federal HST 230gr JHP is the top performer. I fire 50 rounds of each SD ammo batch, and at any point in my testing I experience a failure, the ammo is rejected. There were no problems with HST ammo. Yes this is an expensive test, but what price do you put on living?

    Yeah,

I've thrown just about everything I could lay my hands on at my G30 with so much as a hiccup. I have found some ammo dirtier than others, but really, nothing that caused any type of issue.

Hardball is the most reliable 45ACP bullets available. It feeds and chambers best.
As for effective performance, as a fight stopper, shooting a 1/2 inch hole in your target is very effective.
If it's too mundane, get the hollow point you like and shoot a lot of them to make sure that round will feed every time.
