In my opinon either a slug or quality buck shot. I have the Mossberg 590 Tactical used by the Army.....18in barrel with 9+1 in mag and +4 in stock. Dang thing has a kick though. And I've been playing with the buck shot.....I have some slugs, but, those dang things are $1.00 or more PER round where I've looked. So, I don't play with those much. The Mossy is the only 12ga that fully passed the Armies testing standards. Great choice.

ADD: For me it was Mossy or Remington. I choose Mosssy because the controls are more user friendly and if you ever have to replace the ejector, you the owner, can replace instead of having a gunsmith (must) do it. Mine is set up like the militaries as well, complete with sling too LOL. To me, the Mossy is a more owners user friendly shotgun. For me anyway......tactical that is.....

Federal Le133 (8 pellet) or Le132 (9 pellet) low recoil 00 Buck with Flite Control. I absolutely love this ammo. Even though it's low recoil it still has enough force to cycle my Benelli M4 100% reliably. I can mag dump 7rds on a silhouette sized target before the first empty hits the ground :-D

For a pistol grip, I'd absolutely want low recoil. You might conisder smaller than 00 but note that ammo tests show birdshot has poor penetration.

In the side saddle I keep these slugs http://www.midwayusa.com/product/712...-slug-box-of-5 in case I ever need to stop a truck. Pretty sure they'd do it with one shot Not something I'd recommend shooting without shoulder support unless your real name is Rambo.

For me, pretty much same setup, I just have Rottweiler sabot slugs and 00 buck in my shotgun. I start with a slug and stagger every round after 3 combos I do the rest are buckshot. So slug, buck, slug, buck, slug and the rest buck.

I also put a Knoxx stock on so i am not running a pistol grip.

I load my modified Stoeger SxS double barrel with Remington 3" or 2 3/4" 00 Magnum Buckshot. When you've only got two shots,I figure that I better make the best of it. 15, 00-buck pellets per barrel will take care of the problem.
I can't shoot a pump shotgun anymore due to a motorcycle wreck. I've not got enough strength or movement in my left arm to work the pump.

I had thought about semi auto, but decided since this was my first shotgun (I bought myself rather than hand me downs-inherited guns) that I was getting, I wanted something I was use to. I was use to my grandfathers ole pump shotgun. Nothing wrong with it, but jus decided one day I would buy myself one. So, that's why I started with the tactical style.

I have several shotguns that I got from my father and one from grandfather. Those are target/skeet shooters and hunting guns.

So, I wanted a tactical, and goodness gracious, that bad boy kicks the h3ll out of me....lol. I may change the stock. It does not have a pistol grip. It does have pic style mount on the action for a light. I took it apart before I ever shot it. I had to put it down and come back to it later because I have brain farrt disease and could not read/follow directions LOL.

Came back to it the next weekend, and five minutes had it reassembled. Now I can do it. First time I ever diassembled a shotgun.

Home Defender: #8 shot, You won't shoot up the whole neighborhood, but anybody close enough to be a danger to you can be neutralized.

    I always have a Glock 27, Sig P239, or S&W 13 on me for back-up.
