If you want to know the actual Florida regulations, I recommend this book:

I believe anything that shoots a projectile is considered a firearm in Florida. If that is the case it should be governed the same as a pistol. I'm not sure on this. I didn't pay that much attention to tasers because I don't plan on getting one.
I'll look it up tomorrow...
"While the anti-gunners seem very concerned about the "one life" that your firearm might take -- they are not very concerned about the lives it will save." Jon H. Gutmacher, Florida Firearms - Law, Use & Ownership.
I don't like tasers (or ECD's...the rest of the world calls them tasers) for a variety of reasons.
To start, they are illegal in Michigan. That might change soon, however.
Second, I don't feel that they are appropriate for the average citizen. To start, what are the effects of having the prongs hit someone's face, or hit their chest in such a way that shock is applied to their heart in such a way that it causes undue damage or death? What happens to a very wet attacker? My point being, is the average citizen knowledgable enough to deploy this system? I can make the same arguments for handguns, though...and ultimately I don't feel this is something where we need another law to 'help us'. Rather, it's more stuff to know, and if I have to know that much about it I'll just carry a blaster.
Third, tasers/stun gus CAN kill a person. See it on the news fairly often...how often do people die from OC spray? Probably not often. Then remember that OC spray is generally pretty easy to use. Pull bottle from wherever, aim towards attacker, push button. If you miss, you'll still probably have some effect. If you get hit as well, it's not the end of the world. It just doesn't have as much ability to cause undue harm or death.
I guess also see more potential for lawsuits with a taser. Remember, it's shooting several darts at the attacker. What if it hits them in the eye? They'll surely sue. What if they have a heart condition? Again, see you in court. This is assuming, of course, that it's being used in a purely non-lethal context, like a bar fight where you're about to get your ass kicked, not a situation where your life is in danger.
So, at the end of the day I think they are a valuable tool for specific situations that the average citizen probably won't find themselves in. I feel OC spray is a much better less than lethal solution, and a handgun is a much better lethal solution. For those that can't carry a handgun for whatever reason, I think it has a lot more merit.
sometimes a simple ? can go side ways on ya.
I would not carry one.
