I choose Gen 4 because of the modular back strap. I would have picked Gen 2 if were an option just for the lack of finger grooves.
Having Gen 2, 3 and 4 pistols the grip is the biggest difference to me.
The only thing I like about the newer Gen 4 models is the cutout on the top of the slide to adapt a red dot, or some other optical sight. While I don't care for an electronic sight being slammed around like that every time the gun is fired, as my eyes go to hell as I get older, it is a nice option to have. And if you don't want to use it, you can simply leave the plate in place as it comes from the factory.
I prefer Gen2's or Gen4's. I don't like finger grooves on the compact models so I like a Gen2 19. I like the interchangeable backs straps, dual recoil spring and texture of the Gen4's.
I like my G21SF. I like my 19C. I like my 19 gen 2's. But, the bulk of my Glocks are gen 4. If I could only choose one, it would have to be gen 4 due to modularity.
The backstraps defitiely change the position of my trigger finger on several models of my Glocks. The smaller the pistol, the more I need modular. I use med on reg frames and large on baby Glock and I've found, although I do not like where my finger sits on the 19 and the 30, seems like I'm more consistent if that makes any sense.
Gen 3 for me - 19/26/30s. The grip is perfect for my hand and I like the finish on the side panels. Don't need the double spring RS for the 19 since it's a 9mm. The 26/30s already have it. I have a FNS 9 and 9c with a similar type of stippling and they got Talon rubber grips on them. I didn't have to do this to the Gen 3s. But I understand and respect the fact that others like the Gen 4.
The grip texture on the Gen4s and the mag catch button's larger surface area are what works for me. All the controls are perfect for my hand size. I recently switched my EDC from a Gen3 to Gen4 G19 and was worried about the texture being to abrasive against my side. Wasn't a problem at all.
Now if Glock can work on the trigger guards to avoid getting the "knuckle"...

Only have one gen 4. All other of my glocks are gen 3. I like the trigger better on the gen 3's. Do like the mag release better on the gen 4's and the grip texture is good also. I stipple most of my gen 3's.
I shoot all of mine. I have all four generations of the 17. The gen 4 is the only one I've ever had any trouble with. After a lot of reading and calling Glock customer service numerous times the problem was fixed.
There were issues with the RSA and the ejector and extractor.
