So I am looking at buying my first pistol and have narrowed it down to glocks RTF2 or gen 4. Ideally I would get to shoot both prior, however, I can't find a range that has either to shoot. Sooooooo I have come to the next best thing! I like both of them, have found decent deals on the RTF2 but just can't make up my mind. Anyone shot them both or own both? I just wanna pick some brains to help with my decision. For some reason I am attracted to the slide serrations of the rtf2. Ultimately I don't think that will play a role in my purchase but who knows. Does the dual spring really reduce recoil or would a a Tungsten effectively do the same thing in the rtf2? Well, any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I have shot both extensively. I own the 4th gen though. I like the dual springs and think they help. Also, one of my biggest complaints about the rtf2 is the same as everyone had with them including Police Depts that adopted them. They are too hard on clothing. The grip on them are just too sharp they catch on everything and cause a lot of wear. So, if it is a pistol that you plan to carry either at work or CCW that is a issue with them.
The Grip on the 4th Gen solve what they were trying to do with the RTF with out the grip tearing up clothing/uniforms. Plus there are other improvements to the 4th Gen most internal and discussed on other threads. Just keep the grip in mind when you decide which you truly want

you know, i recently carried my g19 rtf2 for hours concealed while providing armed security for a relative, and it didn't snag on anything or grind into my side at all. the texture isn't that aggressive. i've got some G10 1911 grips that are like cheese graters lol. give it a try, sf, you'll agree
the texture breaks in too. it wears down a little after you shoot it some.
Don, I think the issue comes from carrying them for months, not hours. There are only so many changes of uniforms, so you may even wear a pair within the same week. 8 - 12 + hours a day every week for months at a time would lend to more wear and tear.
I have added skateboard tape to my G19. I'm on the fence about leaving it on. It's clearly aggressive although I wear an undershirt usually, so I'm not worried about my skin as much as I am about my clothing. I also added a small piece for my support hand thumb down the slide but it is wearing on the inside of my holster. In the end, it will probably come off. I too really like the look of the scalloped slide on an RTF2 but everyone I've talked to has had issues with the grip texture so I haven't made the purchase on one yet.
Couldn't agree more. You left out one thing though. Uniforms are expensive. When I was uniformed I would spend around $6-750 per year on uniforms. That could easily double with the RTF wearing on them daily for hours at a time.
Well, I am going to attempt to get to the range tomorrow and shoot them both. From all the responses, it looks as though I will end up with the gen 4. Thank you everyone, you are all greatly appreciated!
I have a 17,19,21sf and 22 all rtf2's i like them alot but have not carried any of them yet. The 21sf rtf2 is my favorite .45. I plan to use a undershirt when i carry them. The 21 is the only one with straight serrations. The gen4's which i do not own the texture is less aggressive tho some say its too harsh, all subjective.
I've carried many pistols under suit and sport coats. I've actually had the tailor add a piece of lining to the inside of the coat because of pistol wear (it's a whole lot cheaper than new suits). But actually one of the things that initially attracted me to Glocks was that they run drier than most any other pistol out there. I've ruined numerous dress shirts with pistol oil from 1911's, and even Sigs. Now I'm die hard Glock, all Gen 4 because that's what works for me.
