    Flying with a handgun

I flew today and carried my Glock, as required, unloaded in a metal locked box in my suitcase. Some ammo in the original cardboard boxes, too. I declared it as I have many times before. Today, they had me go to a room and a TSA agent came in and had me open the suitcase while he swabbed the metal case and ammo and put the swab in a machine that beeped. No problem, I was fine to go and my bag was at the arrival.

What was he swabbing for? I assumed gun powder debris, I don't know. I guess if you swab enough ammo boxes and gun cases, you might find some powder residue even when the ammo is fine and the gun unloaded and clean?

Just a guess but maybe just making sure it was only gun powder.

Maybe, explosives? I've read they do similar things to swab other parts of a suitcase, not related to firearms. I just thought it curious, and in all that, no one asked to see my drivers license until I got to security. I guess we all just forgot about it.

DFW has always (the 2 or 3 times I've flown with guns) had me take them to a seperate TSA area and show the gun. They never swabbed but there is a large machine there I assumed the entire bag went through after I left.

That's interesting. I've had to show (open) the locked case before, but today they didn't want me to open the case. Maybe the next step after swabbing would be to open the gun box to check it out. I get the sense that a lot of times, it just depends on which airline employee you get as to how the process will work. The less (more) experienced the airline agent is may depend on how long it will take. Definitely allow a good bit of extra time to get checked through.

Being New Years Eve, I think they may be going the extra mile since they know ISIS is telling all their supporters to attack us right now.I think the news said their encouraging their lone wolfs to attack us in our churches right now.

That may be true! Didn't think of that!

Come to think about it, they did ask me nicely a couple of times if I was headed home, had plans for tonight, etc. I was headed to see family for a couple days. Maybe it was a precautionary measure.

When I fly, I carry my G26 in the pouch in my cape.
