I have both. I primarily consider the 42 a backup gun and it's normally "off body" in my backpack. I've switched to Underwood's Lehigh XtremePenetrator as I've become convinced (from other's reviews) hollow point in .380 doesnt have the necessary penetration.

I do carry the 43 on body some. I prefer the doublestack Glocks and more commonly have a 26 or 19 when I carry but the 43 is more comfortable IWB. The Fed HST rounds I use for 9mm cost a lot less than the XtremePenetrator so I practice more with what I carry too.

Same idea but in reverse for me. My 43 is always on body because it's so easy to conceal and either my 19 or 17 is in the bag.

The 43 is 8 mm longer, 3 mm taller, 2 mm thicker and about 5 oz heavier with a full mag so just over 22 oz.
You can get + 1 and 2 rd extensions aftermarket. Mine add about 1" to the height with 1/4" of that a finger rest.

I'm not a small person so the size difference goes unnoticed by me. My daughter sees it easily and prefers the G 42.

I normally have my 42 with me everyday but yesterday I brought home a new 43 and 21. I may switch over to the 43 for a while. Its nice to be able to have the choice. Since I started with my Ruger LCP (NRA version) changing it up to the 42 was a good thing.

For SD, I'd have to recommend the 9MM. Anything would be better than nothing, but the more potent 9MM is the better choice.

I have a G42 that has over a thousand rounds through it with just a few shooter induced malfs (big hands, small gun). It is my primary EDC during the work week, with a G17 in the truck. I also have a G26 that is my EDC when I am in a more gun friendly area.

I have handled the G43 several times, but never shot one. Other than being skinnier than my G26 and holding less rounds, the G43 is pretty much the same size, so I have just never felt I had to have one. I am warming up to it and plan to rent one in the near future.

Like many have said before, rent before you shoot it. Recoil is very subjective. You might find that the recoil is no big deal to you.
9mm is way cheaper than .380, even for range ammo and 9mm will always out perform .380 in a fight. If you already have a 9mm, unless you just want a .380, you won't have to stock another caliber, which is way better than trying to scrounge ammo in a ammo drought.
After Sandy Hook, .380 dried up QUICK, soon followed by 9mm. 9mm is cheap enough now that you can buy a few boxes here and there and not kill your paycheck. Do that every two weeks and you will soon have a nice little stockpile of ammo.
