G23SNT - I did go to a different gun shop where field stripping the gun was not an issue.
All 4th generation G17's come with a two-spring guide rod spring assembly, BUT... there are two versions of the guide rod spring. As I understand it, the early 4th gen G17's had problems shooting some lowered power ammo, so Glock came out with a version 2 spring assembly. If you scroll back up in this thread, you'll see a picture posted by sfguard that shows the old spring aright next to the new spring. The new spring has the "0 2" stamping on it.
My G17 came with the old spring... I want to get the new spring... It looks like Glock will provide an 02 spring assembly to people with the early spring. I'm just wondering if I need to call a special phone number to take advantage of the free spring update.

I did exactly that!
The Glock Tech Support representative asked me what trouble I was having with the gun. I told him it was brand new and that a gun professional advised me not to shoot it until I had the new spring. He took down my name and address and said he would send it out today. He also mentioned that they don't normally send one out unless the owner is actually having some kind of trouble.
Thanks again for all your help with the new spring, sf...

I have had an FTE with CCI Blazer, Rem UMC and White Box Winchester. I just got off the phone w/Tech support in GA. They are sending me a "reduced power" recoil spring. The G17 is designed as a "Duty Weapon" and as such has a recoil spring designed for "Premium" ammo. When non-premium rounds are used, there is a chance the recoil will be insufficient for full slide movement to the rear.
I was quite pleased with Customer Support.
have fun, be careful and don't get none on ya!

The non-02 Spring is standard for the G17. It is designed as a "Duty Weapon" for premium ammo.
If you have trouble with other than premium ammo such as used for sport shooting, competition etc., call Glock and discuss your problem with a tech. They will advise you if your application calls for the low power (02) spring.

Yes, but actually the non 02 spring is a 15lbs spring. Same as what is used in the G22. The 02 spring is a 13lbs spring same as what is used in alot of 9mms. So you are correct about the premium ammo but, shooting reloads or other non premium ammo that most will be shooting on the range unless rich or just have alot of extra money to throw away should have better results with the 02 spring

My 02 spring arrived in the mail today.
I replaced the original spring with the new 02 spring. I'm going to shoot at the range tomorrow and plan to shoot more 115gr Winchester and Federal ammunition.
I also have Speer Gold Dot 9mm 124gr GDHP for self defense. It isn't +P or +P+ and Speer rates for 1150 muzzle velocity. Should I leave the 02 spring in when I shoot the Speer SD ammo?
What are the consequences of the lower spring rate?

Leave the 02 spring in the gun it will be fine. I would however, avoid the +p+ ammo. The +p will be fine the +p+ isn't something you want to put alot of through a Glock. It produces very high pressures and something bad could happen to your new pistol.
I took mine out this am with the new spring and it fired everything with no problems. Including 100 rounds of my low pressure competition rounds that would cycle the slide before. I am very happy with it.
