New Glock 19 and a few mods!

Hey all,

I finally took the plunge and bought myself a Glock. I'm now the proud owner of a new third generation Glock 19 with factory night sights. My local range had one for a good price, so I couldn't pass it up.

Initially I was a little disappointed in the trigger, since it was quite a bit rougher and heavier than the range's rental G19. I was not getting quite as good of groups with the new pistol. After my first range trip with it, I did a stone and polish job on all the critical contact areas, and that seemed to help quite a bit. It still would break harder, but was much smoother and more crisp. I don't have a trigger pull gauge, so I don't know the exact number. I wanted to add an extended slide stop lever and and extended mag release, and I also ordered a 3.5 lb connector and NY-1 trigger spring while I was at it.

The parts came in yesterday, and so far I LOVE the difference. The 3.5 lb connector made the trigger break much easier. I can see why this is the connector to use for competition shooting. With the stock trigger spring, I felt it was a little too light overall for defensive purposes (at least until I get more training with this weapon), so I put the NY-1 spring in. It made the takeup stiffer but was still very smooth and clean. It definitely has a more "double-action" type feel to it. I really like this combination. It is stiff enough to provide some extra margin of safety for those adrenaline-pumping situations, but is smooth and crisp enough to allow for very accurate shooting. By riding the reset of the trigger, follow-up shots are fast and on target for me. I'm very satisfied with this mod. BTW, I used a Scherer 3.5 lb connector. I had to bend it out away from the trigger housing a bit more to provide a better snap to the trigger reset, but other than that it dropped right in. Good part.

I also like the extended slide stop lever and extended mag release. Both are Glock factory parts and dropped in and worked flawlessly. The mag release is a little long, so I may trim it down a little to avoid possible accidental mag drops. It's a $4 part, so no biggie if I go back to stock.

The factory night sights are very nice as well. They have good sight picture and are just as bright as the new Meprolights on my Kimber.

I also picked up a glock tool and a fobus paddle holster. Both are great. The Fobus is pretty tight and requires quite a yank to draw the gun. I've read they take a while to break in. I had a dead 9V battery on my desk, so I stuck that in the trigger guard area of the holster to spread it out a bit. I left it like that overnight to let the plastic "stretch" a bit. It helped a lot and now I can draw the gun without giving myself a wedgie, and it still holds the gun very securely.

Thanks to everyone who helped me decide on this fine pistol. I can see myself getting many years of enjoyment from it.

A couple of suggestions ...

If you want something in between the std mag release and the ext one from GLOCK check out the ext from Vickers Tactical. It's exactly halfway between.

I know the Fobus holsters are inexpensive and readily available but there are some MUCH better options available. For paddle holsters I would suggest Comp-Tac. Theirs are top notch. Yes, they are a bit more expensive at around $50-60. However, in this case you do really get what you pay for ... a great product from a great company.

You will be happy with your G19 for years to come. The trigger will smooth out over time from live fire and dry fire ... you do dry fire, right? It makes a huge difference in smoothing out the trigger.

Most certainly. I'm a big fan of dry fire practice. If you can't keep the sights still when dry firing, how do you expect to do it with live rounds. I've probably dry fired this gun a thousand times already. I'm thinking about getting a really cheap laser sight for the front rail to assist with dry fire practice as well. I don't care for them as much for live fire, but they really can give you great feedback on what your hands are doing at the moment the trigger breaks. I may go all out and get a good tactical light/laser combo too. We'll see.

I agree about the holster. You do get what you pay for most of the time. Right now I don't carry concealed, or shoot competition, so the Fobus will get little use. I just wanted to have something to throw on my hip when I go out checking cows or fishing or whatever. If I decide to get my CCW license or get into competition shooting, I'll definitely invest is something top quality. For now, for only $16.99 from MidwayUSA, I have no complaints about the Fobus.

Take a q-tip and rub Armorall to the inside of the Fobus holster, then wipe it dry with a rag. You will be amazed at the difference. I did it to mine for a G26, now I love Fobus holsters.

I did wipe the inside of the Fobus with a silicone gun rag and that helped too. I'll have to try the Armorall. For $17, it's a nice holster. It's my first paddle holster too. I have a blackhawk pancake holster for my kimber. It's nice, but a pain to put on and take off because of the belt loops. With the lighter Glock, the paddle works great and is a snap to put on and take off. I like the rubber back on the paddle. It stays put and doesn't slide around under my belt.

Sounds like a nice setup. Enjoy!

Congrats on the 19 and the mods!!

I do have a suggestion for you about your comment about possibly being worried about the lighter trigger in a stressful defensive situation... Your finger should not be on the trigger unless you are about to fire, so in all honesty, the lighter trigger shouldnt worry you...the training you need to acquire is keep your finger straight until you are ready to fire.

Congrats on a fine pistol

I want to try out one of the 3.5 connectors and maybe another trigger bar. The only place I've found that sold them for a reasonable amount of money was some guy on GlockTalk wanting money orders only. I've had some bad dealings with buying online recently so I chose not to risk it. :)

UPDATE - So my good friend Volgrad put in a smooth trigger, extended mag release and the 3.5 Ghost connector for me this past Sunday. I already had an extended slide stop in. With the exception of sights, I think I'm about done with it. :)

I got my parts from MidwayUSA.com They have a huge selection of parts for all types of guns and great prices. My Scherer 3.5lb connector was $9.99 from them. Shipping is cheap and fast too. The OEM Glock 3.5lb connector (now called 4.5lb) is WAY overpriced in my opinion. They are price gouging! The OEM 5.5lb and 8lb connectors are both less than $6 each, but the OEM 3.5lb is almost $30. That is ridiculous. That's why I went with the Scherer. Fit and finish were identical to the stock 5.5lb connector and it has been flawless for over 500 rounds. If I was going to spend more on a connector, I'd get the Ghost Rocket 3.5lb connector with the overtravel stop.

Just for fun, it might be interesting to apply the ATF import points system to
some American made handguns to see if they would pass. Just off the top of my
head, I would bet that the Kel-Tec 3AT( a .380)that I some times carry would NOT.
