Agreed. I think the last statistics, which are a few years old now showed that 300,000 Georgians had a GWL. Of course that's no where near how many people own a gun but choose, for whatever reason, to not get a GWL and be allowed to legally carry it.
The issue is that as with most places, the majority of people that own firearms, in any numbers, are living in places other than Major Metropolitan areas. I'd feel safe saying that probably most homes in me area have at least one firearm, while there are many more people that live in the same amount of space in a larger city that do not. It's much easier for the BGs in larger populated areas. That's not to say there isn't any crime here but it's no like Atlanta. We have a city that just outside Atlanta called Kennesaw. Years ago, they legislated that every home had to have a firearm. Of course there were all kinds of loop holes to get out of actually making each and every home have a gun but it instilled the fear that a BG would most likely be met with a firearm if they tried to enter a residence in that area. Crime rates dropped tremendously! No blood flowed in the streets like the media said would happen and the area, the last time I was around there, was a very nice place to live.

I remember hearing something about that legislation in GA awhile ago, glad to hear it had some positive effect in that area. Its a shame that firearms get such a bad stigma, like " Guns Kill people". I'm sure anything if used a certain way will kill people... jus sayin. Part of me wishes we could go back to the "old west" ways where almost everybody had somekind of firearm on them but the other part of me thinks with the way society and the newer generations are going, it wouldn't be such a great idea unless proper firearms training and self discipline was stressed everyday....

Im not sure about the stats on the number of guns legitimately owned, but i know jacksonville has one of the highest crime rates in the us. Its not because the requirements to get your cwl, its that most people dont understand or fear guns.
It's a domino effect. One parent decides they want to be against firearms and has two children. They aren't taught that a firearm is simply a tool and can be used for good, and is safe is respected, or for evil, they are simply just taught to stay away from them. Those two children grow up and have two of their own and pass on that belief. Now we've got 4 sets of adults that are having children and so on.
Firearms used to be a requirement for living, so one could hunt and protect their land. This is generally no longer the case as they are grocery stores on every corner now. Gun safety used to be taught in schools but that has been stopped due to Political Correctness and all that BS. This is why I try to spread the word as often as possible, helping people into the world of firearms and the ownership of them, and whenever possible, passing along the tradition to children. Nothing makes me happier than to see young kids with their Fathers/Mothers at a range learning how to shoot!

It took 6 weeks to the day for my wife and I to get our carry permits. Fill out the initial paperwork which you obtain from the MS Highway Patrol. Submit notarized paperwork, including photo, get fingerprinted and wait. Funny thing is they take another picture at the time you get fingerprinted. This is the one that appears on you permit, not the one where you had your coat and tie on trying to look real nice. The picture on my permit has me wearing a Harley-Davidson tshirt. Go figure. Lady said that other picture stays on file with your paperwork. $132 total. Good for 5 years. Glad I did it.
Since no one mentioned Ohio,
It is basically go in to purchase, fill out the forms, and (if you pass the background check) walk out with a new gun. The check can come back right away or take time, if after 3 days the shop isn't told no, they can at their discretion sell or not.

in mn there are 2 different permit to obtain a handgun from a ffl
ptp-permit to purchase 5-10 days to get the card usually 5
ptc-permit to carry-30 days to get card
with either permit go to the store pick out gun 4473 form nics check out the door with new gun
Here in Texas, if you have a CHL you can buy and walk out the door in about 30 minutes after filling out form 4473.
If you don't have a CHL you'll have to wait till the background check comes back after filling out form 4473. If it comes back clean you can walk out that day with your new purchase. No mandatory waiting period. If there is some concern you could have to wait a few days. They have 3 days to approve or deny the purchase.
It appears that i got off topic. In reply to the thread, here in florida you have to sign up for your cwl. I use the abbreviation cwl because on the florida license it says "concealed weapons license". Other states might call it differently. Depending on what class you take it will vary on the hours from 2-8 hours. You get your certificate that day. I would suggest immediately making an appointment with the doa because the shortest wait time to get an appointment is at least one month. My appointment was a month and a week away and i was told that it was during their slow period. Under no circumstances do they take walk-ins. Dont waste your time. Once it was all submitted it took exactly one week from that day to get my license in the mail. It was the longest wait ever but it eventually came. I assume that i got my license in the shortest time possible because i have no previous record and am a us citizen. Sad part is, i hear florida has the fastest turnaround.
GA has issued weapons permits the next day. There may even be an example that was turned around the same day but the person had to go pick it up instead of having it mailed to them.
