    Talking New guy from SoCal

I'm an excited new gun owner. I'll be picking up my first handgun; a new Glock 22 Gen 4 next week. I'm already checking all the mods out there. For starters, I'm looking at a night sight, backstrap plug and extended slide stop lever. Not to mention researching all the holsters, magazines and ammo. I look forward to learning from the experience here on the forum.

I am in San Diego / Southern California. I believe I got a Gen 4. Forgive my ignorance... I'm a total noob. Picking it up in a week. The receipt says Glock Model 22 .40 S:W If it's new, wouldn't I be getting a Gen 4?

    Welcome to the forum.

I believe the Gen 4 models are not approved for civilian ownership in Cali.

OP, The only way to get a Gen 4 in California is via private party, usually from LEO. So you have a Gen 3, which in my 25 years of shooting Glocks in competition, is better than a Gen 4. Newbies and mods don't go together, except for sights and a minus OEM connector, you asking for trouble. Night sights are only of use in low light, and not at the range. An extended slide stop, without the right grip, will only get bumped during firing and cause issues. Look at Dawson Precision, Taran Tactical or Heinies for sights. Only Glock OEM for mags, and a BladeTech straight drop Revolution holster to start, BladeTech single mag pouches and a Wilderness Tactical Instructors belt. Then take shooting lessons from a competition Master to get the fundamentals: stance, grip, sight picture and trigger control. Get out to Linea de Fuego on the Pala reservation and check out their USPSA and IDPA competition. Lots of guys running Glocks and they will be glad to show you all the stuff they use. And don't buy reloads, it's not that you can't shoot reloads in any Glock, it's just you don't want to be the guy that finds out how crappy they can be unless you load your own. 180 grain is the standard weight for 40S&W. Any good quality ammo will work.

Wow, Thanks GlockScott! I appreciate the all the great info and advise. I'll chill on the mods for now. I can't help myself, I'm rather excited. Except for the sight and what is the minus OEM connector you mentioned?

All the info you provided is exactly what I need. I googled Linea de Fuego and it is literally 15 minutes from my house. I see reference to a North County Shootist Association, is it recommended? There is also the Rainbow Shooting Club very close to me. Any comments or thoughts on that one? I see the Oceanside Practical Pistol Club is located at Iron Sights, that where I purchased my new acquisition.

Again thank you. I want to be safe and smart as a new gun owner.

Don't go to Rainbow, it's full of newbies on a parallel shooting line, not good. Go to Pala on the 2nd or 4th Saturday.
