    Exclamation Colt 1911 Officially Retired

Military.com has announced the very last unit in the Army (Actually Marine Corp) that used/issued the Colt 1911's is being retired. This pistol lasted a whooping 105 years.

I don't know of any personal weapon that lasted as long as the 1911.

I sure hope to get a few from CMP once they go on sale. I don't think I can remember how to break one down, but, after I got one in my hands I'm sure it would come back to me.

Just wow, 105 years.....it certainly gave a LONG service life. Who would've known.

I just read this article in Military.com online addition. So long to a great pistol. It's replaced by the G19.....

ADD: Crap: I can't spell......can someone fix the heading please....!!

I am not sure the CMP is getting them. I read an article saying they were and even had them priced at $1k; but then read something else a few months ago saying they were to be scraped as, well; the 1911 is a GUN and all so....

Besides, a gun that old would have seen many wars and therefore be a weapon of war. It would be extra Killy. Old woman ( and liberals ) would pee themselves at the mear mention of 1911, kids would have nightmares and history books would not acknowledge the year between 1910 and 1912 other than to say nothing happened in this time.

If I were to guess, I would say no, the polymer will become hard and brittle. I have a older G19 and the frame is hard, harder than any newer one. It has a crack at the bottom of the mag well where it thin. The gen 3 and 4 are not that way.

I can't see any advantage to buying these pistols from the CMP. That is assuming they even get any. Considering you can buy a brand new Colt Government Model for under $900.00, (I've seen them even less in 9 MM), there would be zero advantage to paying the CMP for what amounts to a beat up relic. Unless it is an incredible bargain, which it wouldn't be. Plus they're a PITA to buy from. I'm also willing to bet there will still be some Special Forces units that will continue to carry them.
I don't need my AR-15 "Assault Rifle" any more than Rosa Parks needed to sit in the front of the bus.

The advantage is owning a piece of history. Owning a pistol that could have possibly been in WW-1, WW-2, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf. I have two M-1 carbines I'd love to know the history of. I want a Garland, but lately I've been hearing that the supply from CMP has just about dried up. If I want one, I'll just have to pony up the cash and get one.

I have an old German Luger that I've often wondered about.

Yep. I agree. 1911's are sold new today. I do not own one. But, I would shell out the money for a old 1911. The things have been rebuilt many times over throughout the years. I think the M1's were officially rebuilt twice before they retired them. After WWII and then around the Korean war. And the M1's did not have a service life near as long as the 1911 did.

Add: The last batch of 1911's are not in very good condition as I understand it. The nice ones have already long been sold. The last batch, supposedly 100K units, are in poor condition. Senator McCain introduced legislation that will most likely prevent them from seeing the civilian market.
