I'd first have his cognitive abilities evaluated professionally. His not being able to "get" how a semi-auto works is worrisome. I don't like shotties for h.d. for a number of reasons.

Nothing wrong there that hasnt always been. Years ago he got upset that everytime he called with a computer question I'd tell him to call HP. He was upset cause I had just walked my sister through replacing a system board over the phone. "She follows directions"

Good luck with your Dad. Glocks, for example, are such simple machines, that I'm having trouble understanding his inability to understand how Glocks work. I don't see his lack of knowledge about computers the same.

If you're abandoning the pistol in favor of a long gun anyway, why not just go for an AR15? I know he wasn't comfortable with semi-auto pistols, but would he be comfortable with a semi-auto rifle? If he might, that could be the way to go. It is a fantastic home defense gun and concerns of over-penetration just don't line up with physics (and testing).
