We discuss so many other things I wanted to ask this question. Yes, I am a NRA Recruiter but that is not why I am asking. I have learned over time that some just don't join and let the other guy do it. Some don't even know that included with their membership is an insurance policy on their firearms. I won't go into all the benefits; they can be seen at NRA.org, but I am wondering just the same. One thing is for sure......Obama wants your guns taken away......think about it.
Yes, they also have great benefits for Law Enforcement Officers.

OSS, have things changed at the NRA since the 1980s-1990s?
I was a member for many years - until not long after Charlton Heston came on board. At that time they started trying to distance themselves from the "extremists" - like me - who viewed the 2nd amendment to the constitution as an affirmation of the PEOPLE's right to keep and bear arms. They focused on how they were protecting the rights of hunters and sportsmen. I feel the 2nd amendment is there to protect our God-given rights to have firearms for whatever reason the individual sees fit. Not just for hunting.
I always felt like Heston never turned away from his support of the gun control act of 1968.
The monthly magazines changed from interesting gun articles to long boring political diatribes.
In exchange for my $30 a year, or whatever it was at the time, I was inundated with weekly phone calls and mass mailed requests for more money. They probably wasted over $100 in exchange for the $30 I sent. So I did not feel like NRA represented my needs, or were being good stewards of my money. I said goodbye to the NRA and joined GOA and GOSC (GOSC is associated with NRA, but is not the NRA).
Just my two cents worth and probably not even worth that...

The political wrangling that goes on, that Joe Citizen never gets to know about until another silly law is passed, is something the NRA is very good at, without their devotion and diligence to keep our rights, we could possibly be in the same boat with Great Britain and Australia !
I am not a hunter, but, nor am I a politician, but we all know basically what needs to be done !

YES for a long time.
Going on my second year, I just sent my 2 year renewal in a couple weeks ago. I like the self defense insurance. It's cheaper to pay now then later, should later ever happen!
I was getting tired of the letters telling me my membership was due and send them money. Plus all the spam in my email. I finally called them and asked how could my membership be due when two months ago I got it. She said that was something to an effect of a reminder or some kind of crap like that. I said, take me off of the mail list and stop sending me crap in the mail period. And it stopped. All I wanted was the self defense insurance, and the cool looking holder they sell for my NRA member ship card and my CCW permit LOL.
I do believe in what the NRA does, join again, call them and ask them to stop sending all the spam in the snail mail and email they will stop.
Our NRA is working towards a Castle Doctrine law, in other words stand your own ground law. I appreciate what they do, just like you I got tired of all the spam. Your not the only one to say they quit the NRA for those reasons.
I agree. I get about 90% less spam than I used to.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.......for the longest time I felt like I was in the same boat alone. Then about 4 years ago someone listened at NRA and realized that they were driving away members by always "begging" for money and renewals long before they were due. I asked this question to see how others felt and I appreciate the honesty. Let me say they have changed and I honestly believe for the better. The insurance, the magazines and more than anything else their constantly attacking those who want to take away our rights was enough for me to "come back" into the fold. Like every big organization they are not one size fits all but what they are these days are constantly on the attack. Did you know it was the NRA who backed and got passed the bill that ensures every state honors other states concealed carry permits? Or that they kept the Justice Department and BATF from keeping "lists" of firearm checks. I could go on and on but it isn't because I'm a member or a recruiter; it's because they are doing the right thing these days and protecting our rights......aggressively. Please don't take my word for it, do your own homework and make an informed decision. If it's the same one I came to the I urge you to join......if not then at least you gave them an honest look. NRA.org will take you to the place you can look at everything.
