    Negligence at the indoor range.

Negligence is not limited to discharge. I found this out yesterday.
While shooting yesterday at my local indoor range I did something really negligent. I was shooting with my sun glasses on, decided to change to my clear glasses. And you guessed it I moved my ear protection just a little away from my ear to adjust my glasses. Well a little is a lot, and you guessed it. The shooter in the next lane fired his hand canon. A day later my ear is still bothering me

That kind of experience does two things:
    1. Reminder that TV and movies are fantasy
    2. Brings a dose of reality to what it would be like if one actually had to fire a gun in a home. It makes me re-think those next steps, especially trying to communicate with family.

I've had that happen a few times too. Adjust the safety glasses if they were getting foggy and just a small amount of movement on the ear muffs. Ears would ring for a solid day.

That is a good reason to wear plugs and muffs. The plugs will never fail you.

Question - I've never understood why guys buy electronic muffs then wear plugs underneath. I get that most electronic muffs don't provide enough protection for indoor ranges, but why have them at all if plugs are also needed. Can you still hear better with that scenario?

It's a recommendation by many of those that manufacture hearing protection. If you look at how the NRR is defined and used, most consider the NRR to be nominal, meaning it's a laboratory value, and doesn't really reflect actual circumstances. So for additional protection a set of plugs with muffs. Equally confusing ... you don't add the NRR from each and get a total protection value. According to the acoustical experts, wearing both achieves a value less than the combined NRR.

Most of the studies are for industrial applications where the "noise" is much longer in duration than a gun shot. The purpose tends to be for hearing protection ... more than hearing, if you know what i mean. Some one needs to really analyze specifically the shooting sports and provide data reflective of just that. As it is now, most are inferring what's best in the way of protection.

People don't really realize how loud gunfire really is, especially inside. My ears took a minor beating, while in the Marines, and they ring constantly now.
