    Glock 17 gen 4 9mm

I just purchased my first glock 17 gen 4 9mm. I'm having a little trouble deciding what ammo to use for my needs. I need something for target practice with my wife, (who also just bought her first pistol)Home defense, I Also need something for charging hogs as I'm just getting started working on a hog ranch. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

My recommendation for practice ammo is to go 124gr. I shoot Freedom Munitions (donít confuse with Freedom Ammunition) pretty much exclusively for practice and match pistol ammo as Iíve found it to be a really good value. Itís not the best but itís clean shooting brass case ammo at a good price. I take advantage of their flat rate or free shipping specials.

In general 124gr feels like less recoil than 115gr. The first time my wife shot 124gr she told me to never buy 115 again :-). I actually shoot mostly 147gr now but some of my Glocks can be picky with it and I only went 147 for competition purposes, otherwise Iíd have stayed with 124gr.

For personal defense - I have no knowledge of 9mm vs hog. In the 9mm vs ballistic gel world, every head to head comparison Iíve seen comes out in favor of Federal HST although they all pretty much agree the difference in the major brands isnít enough to worry about.

Personal defense ammo is loaded for higher velocities so what I said above about heavier bullets having less felt recoil doesnít apply. 147gr HST is noticeably more recoil than 124gr HST to me.

Many guys want more velocity so they will choose +P ammo (it stands for more pressure than standard but think more power). I originally chose HST 124gr +P because of its excellent ballistics. However, recent studies show the most important aspect of self defense shooting is speed and accuracy of follow up shots. Based on this, I chose to change to standard HST 124gr because the reduced recoil resulted in faster, more accurate follow up shots from me.

    Congrats on your new Glock.

I think I'd survey a few of the other ranch hands to see what ammo they're using before I tried to stop a charging hog... Might need a little more firepower than 9mm...

Congrats on the new G17. The G17 is my favorite of several Glocks and several other brands. You are a very lucky man to have a wife that has any interest in pistols and shooting! I only do target shooting because of my age and use 115gr. mainly because that is normally what's available at the range where I shoot. However, I think I will try some 124gr. based on the comments by MtStream.

When I first read your post I thought of a farm that raised pigs. I just realized you're probably referring to a ranch that guides hog hunts - yeah, better check with guys who have more experience with shooting wild hogs. I have not hunted hogs.

Congrats on your G17 purchase. I have been a G17 owner since 1989. For your charging hogs you'll need bullet penetration. Go with the 147gr JHP.
