How often to change mag springs

My G19 (w/2 mags each downloaded to 14 rds) sits fully loaded 365 days a year. I take it to the range every few months and run a couple of boxes through it. I've had it now for about five years. How often do you change the springs in the mags to make sure they are reliable when you need them? What do police armorers do?

I used to rotate loaded mags with ones that stay empty just to help keep them fresh. Now, I don't. I have a few in the car, a few on the nightstand, and a few more in my bug out bag. They are all loaded. I haven't had a magazine related failure. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change them out ever so often, but I haven't put a routine in place yet.
    Don't retreat! Reload!!!

From what I understand, keeping your magazines fully loaded will not harm the springs. Springs only experience wear when used (as in loading/unloading.) I typically keep all of my mags fully loaded.

I agree 100% with Ranger45. After extensive research, to my knowledge keeping a spring compressed does not at all cause any wear, or cause it to "take a form". What causes springs to wear is cycling (compression then expansion) over and over. Loading the magazine 1 round short of full capacity is not a bad idea, as it takes a little pressure off the feel lips, as well as better assures a positive seating when the magazine is inserted into the mag well, although I always load and store all magazines at full capacity and have never experienced problems.

Something that I learned at my Armorer's Course, that I will perform about once per year on my magazines is checking the springs. The spring inspection is perfomed by:

    1. Unload ammunition from the magazine
    2. Carefully remove floorplate and insert from magazine (if you need instructions on how to do this, let me know)
    3. Allow the magazine spring to fully extend
    4. When the follower and spring are fully seated in the magazine, the bottom of the spring should extend out at least 1" from the bottom
    5. If the spring extends less that 1", it should be replaced to ensure strong and positive feeding

I hope this helps answer your question. If you have any questions regarding how to dissasemble or inspect your mags, let me know. I'm still working on better ways to describe things Take care

Everyone has cleared it up here. I rotate my mags personally and have thousands of rounds through them without issues. I change mag springs when I start having issues feeding reliably.

I have never had any problems with my magazines even with some of them loaded after several years being loaded. I use to shoot my Glock 22 in competitions at the local range. When I got busier and hung up my gear, I placed most of the extra magazines in the bottom of my safe. I recently found the magazines fully loaded so I took them to the range and shoot them without any problems. Thanks for the great information Purkeypilot on how to test the springs.

Thanks to all who responded. Sounds like I'm OK with what I'm doing. I pulled my springs out and they look good, well beyond 1", so I'm not going to mess with them.
    I'll just keep shooting.

Hey les45, I'm glad everything is good with your mags. I would honestly say that you could go years and years using the same mags every day before you ever needed to change a spring. If you shoot with the same mags a lot, and do that mag spring check once a year or so, there will be no question when you need a new spring. It will be apparent Take care and have fun
