    What happened?

A week ago I was shooting my 21SF in a local match. I didnít make it through the first magazine when it started malfunctioning. I was experiencing double feeds, FTF and FTE. After several immediate action steps and mag changes, I finally made it through the first stage.

I took it to the safety table and stripped the slide and found something Iíve never seen happen in a Glock before. The spring underneath the drop safety was turned sideways and lodged in the safety channel. I reassembled the pistol and went to the next stage.

Same thing. My score and time went almost to the bottom. Iíve never had any problems with the magazines and I had changed mags several times while trying to clear the malfunctions. I went home and changed every spring except the RSA. I was thinking it could be a bad batch of my reloads so I decided to try an experiment. I took my Sig P220 and some of those rounds to the range to see if the problem was ammo related.

No malfunctions at all. I didnít think to take my 21SF with me this time, but Iím going to try it again tomorrow and see what happens.

"spring underneath the drop safety" - I think you may have flipped the names of the safeties here so I'm just checking. The drop safety is the plastic ledge in the trigger housing the trigger bar rides on - #3 in the image below. I can't think of what spring would be sideways under it other than the trigger spring, so I think you meant to say the firing pin safety spring (#2)?

I have seen that happen before - typically it makes it near impossible to pull the trigger or keeps the firing pin from moving freely. Best to replace the entire firing pin safety w/spring (~$2).

However, that doesn't explain the double feeds, failure to feed and failure to eject. By double feed do you mean two live rounds coming off together or a live round shoving a spent back into the chamber?

Without waiting for your response - I'd start with inspecting the extractor focusing on the claw and replacing the spring loaded bearing and extractor depressor plunger spring (I would say inspecting the bearing and spring but who knows if they're worn down or not without a new one in hand to compare to)

Inspect the ramp on the bottom of the slide that strips the next round off the mag. I'd check the mag catch by taking the slide off and inserting the mag to test how they seat, if they move too much - there should be some but you want to see if the mag catch has issues.

What would make the firing pin safety spring turn sideways ?

Agree that it should have no bearing on the other symptoms, ftf/fte are issues related to the handling of the ammo, ejector/extractor/mag/mag catch, etc. unless the sideways spring caused limp wristing symptoms.

Gonna try and get out to the range today myself !

Yep, brain fart. It was the firing pin safety spring that was turned sideways.

And, I went to the range this morning with what was left of the same ammo I was using at the match. There were several malfunctions with the Glock. None with my newest batch of reloads.

When I've actually noticed it happen has been during reassembly when the spring catches something and compresses a little then releases and ejects itself from the safety into the channel before the whole thing gets seated. I could believe a scenario where it didn't come all the way out but managed to get itself into the channel at a funky angle then during live fire became fubar the rest of the way.

Even though the spring can be removed from the firing pin safety, I try not to. If it does come out, if I can't get it to "screw" back in tight I just toss the entire safety and replace. The firing pin safety is a part I keep extras on hand. They only cost about $2. The internet became consumed with sniping a coil or two off of the spring cause some idiot thought it would lighten the trigger pull and other idiots started reposting the idea like it was fact. So if I get a hold of a used gun I just automatically replace the safety on principle alone now.

Don't worry about the flipping parts FYRT - your mind was on the issue, I do that all the time. Odd that ammo may end up being the issue. Were the bullets seated different?

I was shooting some 200 grain SWC reloads. I suspect a few of them didn’t get as much powder as they needed. I normally load those with 4.5 grains of Titegroup and don’t have any problems.

Yes. I didn’t have any setback with any of the rounds that didn’t chamber.

Taper crimp is irrelevant to setback. O.a.l. is critical with SMC bullets. Also check charge.
