Any other LInux users on the Forum?

Just wonder if anyone else on the forum love Linux as their Op System. I've been using it for around 8 months now and I'm totally sold on it. Came over when my iMac off 11 years finally died from an EMP from a nearby lightning strike. Anyway, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise since it stopped me from being so Tech Lazy and got me learning about computers again. Anyway, just wanted to see how many other Linux users were hangin' out here.

I did off and on, and especially when the first commercial version of Red Hat Linux came out. The concept was free software as in free beer, but pay for tech support. Over the years I tried several flavors off and on, SUSE, a few others, and most recently Ubuntu. The same problem haunted me from the beginning, when Linux was a small "hobbiest" OS, available for download, by analog modem from your local BBS. Drivers. You upgraded your box and there was no drivers available. Second, quality. One guy working on one part in Uganda, another gal working on something in the Pakistan, etc. Finally, I just got to old for that crap (all the aggravation, became at least as aggravating as Windows. I tired of it.

Please don't get defensive, as I've seen over the last 20 years. Linux people tend to be passionate about their OS. Me, I'm just getting old and grumpy, and don't care if my OS came out of a box of Cheerio's, as long as everything works.

I have Ubuntu in one of my desktops, I like it! Only problem is figuring out drivers for printer, etc. Took a while but I got it working now. Very stable, fast, and small footprint. My desktop is fairly old and would run slow even after a fresh windows install, Ubuntu is much faster on old systems.

I "do" several types of message boards and have read of the trials and tribulations of being a "Mac"

I especially love to hear them complain about not being able to watch YouTube videos ! ! !

I am using XP Pro and have it locked down with 5 protection apps using Fx 25.0.1 and run full scans once a week. I have not caught nothing bad in a long time, (a couple of years ago I got a bad bug and had to format but it was not a biggie, if your ok with doing that yourself), if I were to give up the "wares' board I am sure I would not be exposing myself to what comes with downloads, and would be even more secure, but, what tha hey, yah only go round once in this life, as far a I know !

I started out with Ubuntu 12.04 and at the time, not really knowing anything other then OS X I thought it was ok but after using Mint 15 MATE then switching to Point Linux 2.2 with a MATE desktop I've totally given up in Unity. Closest I come in on my #3 "play" laptop that has Ubuntu/Gnome. Gnome 3 is a bit better for me since I found the "Tweak Tools" in the apps. I can now create folders on the desktop and I have my Home folder and Trash on the desktop as well so I can get to them easily. I also have it set up so my Removable Media shows up on the desktop but I still like the MATE( Gnome 2) desktop a bit better then I do Gnome 3.
Of course I'm a total Deb-Head having started with Ubuntu which is Debian based and now using Point Linux which is Debian 7.2 "Wheezy" so I'm just so use to "apt-get" that it's hard for me to use anything else. I did give Fedora a try, "yum" wasn't bad but like I said, I do "apt-get" in my sleep. LOL

I did have a Windows 8 laptop earlier this year(Feb. IIRC) that we got at WalMart after my iMac went belly up after 11 years of trouble free service. I returned it after a week because even running Anti-Virus protection it picked up a Trojan Horse virus and it borked the system. Never had that problem with my iMac and I've not had it since I've started running Linux on my 3 older HP/Compaq nc6400 laptops either. Windows just plain sucks, sorry but those are the facts. Mac is a lot better but expensive and Linux totally rocks. If you can't find a Distro that you like in Linux then you're not looking hard enough.
